Sara Hanneken

Before her illness, Sara Hanneken lived a full, active life. She worked full-time, enjoyed live music, bingo, and movies, and loved spending time with her family and friends. But when Sara was diagnosed with a rare and serious condition that caused painful wounds and advanced kidney failure, her life changed dramatically.

In September 2024, Sara’s care team referred her to Vibra Hospital of Fargo, a critical care hospital that provides specialized treatment and extended recovery for patients with complex medical needs. She was on high-flow oxygen, in constant pain, and too weak to participate in therapy. Her condition was so serious that she was advised to consider palliative care, and she changed her code status to DNR.

But Sara wasn’t ready to give up. “When I was told to consider palliative care, something switched in my brain,” she recalled. “It motivated me to live.”

Sara’s condition began to improve. She grew stronger, more alert, and able to participate in her recovery again. After leaving the hospital, she required another surgery and later returned to Vibra Hospital for additional wound care and therapy. Her care team began a new treatment that helped her wounds heal more effectively, allowing her to move and exercise more comfortably.

Sara started small, learning to transfer with assistance and build her strength gradually. As her wounds healed, she began standing, then walking short distances with support. Through persistence, patience, and the encouragement of her care team, Sara steadily gained confidence and independence.

By the time of her discharge, she could walk more than 300 feet with a walker, climb stairs, and manage her daily activities. She even learned to care for her own wound dressings at home. On October 12th, Sara achieved what once seemed impossible: she returned home completely independent.

Reflecting on her journey, Sara shared, “Everybody at Vibra is so encouraging. My wins were their wins, and my setbacks were theirs, too. They learned and respected my likes, habits, and routines. I honestly feel like the staff here are not only my friends but part of my family. Even though my recovery was long and frequently painful, they made it as enjoyable as possible. I will always be grateful for them—not just for the care they gave me, but for their support and friendship. I will truly miss them.”

Sara, your strength, courage, and optimism have inspired everyone around you. It has been an honor to be part of your recovery journey, and we wish you continued health and happiness as you move forward.
