Mary posing with the Vibra Hospital of Fargo team

Mary Murphy

Mary Murphy had always been active, so it was unexpected when she began experiencing shortness of breath. As her symptoms worsened, she sought emergency care.

Despite initial treatment, her condition rapidly declined, and her oxygen levels continued to drop. Doctors were uncertain about the exact cause. There was speculation that inhalation exposure from her work detailing cars might have played a role, but no clear diagnosis emerged.

As Mary’s breathing became increasingly compromised, she required intubation and ventilator support to breathe. Her condition progressed to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a serious condition that made it difficult for her body to get the oxygen it needed. When she was unable to be extubated, a tracheostomy tube was placed for long-term respiratory support, along with a PEG tube for nutrition.

After an extended hospitalization in St. Cloud, Mary was referred to Vibra Hospital of Fargo—a critical care hospital specializing in the treatment of patients with complex medical conditions requiring extended hospital-level care. Her prognosis remained uncertain, and multiple physicians warned Mary and her sons that weaning off the ventilator would be extremely slow—if possible at all.

However, Mary was determined to prove them wrong.

From the moment she arrived at Vibra Hospital, Mary exceeded every expectation. Within just six days, she was not only tolerating a speaking valve but also completely off the ventilator—a milestone achieved far sooner than anticipated. Her progress didn’t stop there. She underwent a swallow evaluation and successfully resumed her regular diet.

Mary’s resilience was evident to everyone who worked with her. Despite the distance from her family and the challenges of a prolonged hospitalization, she remained focused on her recovery. By the time of her discharge, she was standing with assistance and ready to continue her journey at an inpatient rehabilitation facility.

Thank you, Mary, for inspiring us all with your perseverance! We wish you continued health and success in your recovery.
