Kent Dokkin

Before his illness, Kent Dokkin lived an active and independent life with his wife. He worked at Arctic Cat and enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially gardening and caring for the lawn. But one day, everything changed when Kent suddenly began vomiting blood and was rushed to the emergency room.

Doctors discovered that Kent was experiencing hemorrhagic shock caused by an upper gastrointestinal bleed. He was placed on a ventilator to help him breathe while doctors treated the serious issues affecting his liver and digestive system. His condition left him weak, disoriented, and unable to care for himself.

When Kent was stable enough to begin the next phase of recovery, his care team referred him to Vibra Hospital of Fargo, a critical care hospital specializing in the treatment of patients with complex medical needs who require extended hospitalization and rehabilitation.

Upon admission to Vibra Hospital, Kent needed assistance to stand for even 30 seconds and was dependent on others for self-care tasks such as dressing and bathing. He also struggled with significant confusion. Despite these challenges, Kent was determined to improve.

Working closely with Vibra Hospital’s interdisciplinary team, including nurses, therapists, and physicians, Kent began to improve. At first, he used specialized equipment to assist him in standing. With consistent effort, he quickly progressed to using a walker. As his physical strength improved, so did his mental clarity.

By the time of his discharge, Kent had made incredible progress. He was able to walk more than 300 feet with a walker, climb stairs, and independently manage many of his daily activities.

Reflecting on his experience, Kent shared, “My stay was wonderful. It’s a good group of people who have been amazing to work with. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be going home.”

Kent, your motivation and perseverance have been truly inspiring. It was an honor to be part of your journey, and we wish you health and success as you move forward!
