David Burrous

Before his hospitalization, David Burrous lived independently at home. Despite managing several chronic health conditions, he enjoys staying active by attending dances, participating in support groups, and spending quiet time relaxing at home.

When David began experiencing persistent gagging while eating, he sought medical care at Sanford. During evaluation, doctors discovered a mass on his liver. Shortly afterward, David was admitted with severe sepsis caused by E. coli. His condition became critical, and he developed respiratory failure along with other complications.

David was referred to Vibra Hospital of Fargo, a critical care hospital that specializes in extended recovery for patients with complex medical needs. When he arrived, he required full assistance for mobility and self-care. He was dependent on a mechanical lift for transfers and was not yet able to stand during therapy sessions.

But David had a clear goal: he wanted to return home by Christmas.

Physical and occupational therapy began immediately. On his very first day, he was assisted into a standing machine to begin rebuilding strength. Just three days later, he was walking 20 feet with a walker. With continued determination and the encouragement of his care team, David progressed rapidly.

He worked diligently to regain independence in dressing, bathing, and feeding himself. By the time of his discharge on December 23, David had achieved remarkable milestones. He was walking up to 1,000 feet with a four-wheeled walker, navigating a few steps, and completing his self-care independently. Most importantly, he achieved his goal of returning home in time for the holidays!

Reflecting on his experience, David shared, “Everyone was so good to my mom and me. It took no time to gain strength despite being so weak. I’m so much better now. I’m extremely grateful for the helpful staff, good food, and the good partnership Vibra has with Sanford.”

David, your determination and positive spirit have been truly inspiring. It has been an honor to be part of your recovery journey, and we wish you continued health and success as you move forward.
