Curtiss Tollefson
Curtiss Tollefson lived independently, enjoying time with his grandchild, friends, and fishing. However, when his health took a turn, everything changed.
After undergoing an appendectomy and small bowel resection, Curtiss developed septic shock and respiratory failure, requiring life-saving care. In addition to his respiratory challenges, he also suffered from severe wounds, leaving him unable to move independently or manage his daily needs.
Due to his need for prolonged hospital-level care, Curtiss was referred to Vibra Hospital of Fargo. As a critical care hospital, Vibra Hospital specializes in helping patients with complex medical conditions stabilize and regain strength before transitioning to the next phase of recovery.
At first, progress was slow. Curtiss required BiPAP for respiratory support and was entirely dependent on others for mobility and self-care. The effects of his illness, including depression and delirium, made recovery even more difficult. But as he built trust with his care team and his condition improved, Curtiss’s determination grew. He set his sights on getting stronger and returning home!
With time, hard work, and the support of his care team, Curtiss made remarkable progress. By the time he was ready for the next step in his recovery, he could walk over 300 feet with a front-wheeled walker and independently manage daily tasks such as dressing and bathing. His respiratory function also improved significantly, allowing him to leave the hospital with only minimal oxygen assistance.
After nearly two months at Vibra Hospital, Curtiss transitioned to inpatient rehabilitation to continue rebuilding his strength.
We are grateful to have been part of Curtiss’s journey and wish him all the best in his continued recovery!
